How to Use a Reed Diffuser : Placement, Maintenance, and How Long It Really Lasts

Posted by Mélanie Ouellette on

Reed diffusers have become one of the most popular ways to fragrance a home — and for good reason. No flame, no timer, no effort. You set them up once and they quietly do their job in the background.

We've been making diffusers at Baltic Club for a few years now, and the response has been overwhelming. Here's what we've learned, and what we actually use ourselves.

What is a reed diffuser, exactly?

A reed diffuser is a glass bottle filled with scented oil, into which you insert a set of porous reeds. The reeds absorb the oil and release the fragrance slowly into the air through evaporation. The result is a continuous, subtle scent — nothing overwhelming, nothing that needs tending.

Our diffusers come in 100 ml bottles and use the same fragrance families as our candles and incense — so if you love a Baltic Club scent, you can layer it across different formats throughout your home.

How long does a reed diffuser last?

The honest answer: longer than you'd expect.

We indicate 3 to 4 months on the box, which is a conservative estimate based on typical use. In practice, our own diffusers stay fragrant well beyond that — one of ours has been going strong for over a year, with oil still in the bottle and a scent just as fresh as day one.

The key variable is evaporation rate, which depends on room temperature, air circulation, and how often you flip the reeds. A diffuser in a warm, well-ventilated room will go faster than one in a cool, still space.

Where to place your reed diffuser

Placement is everything. A reed diffuser works best in contained spaces where the scent can build gently rather than dissipate immediately.

Entryway: one of the best spots. Guests notice it the moment they walk in, and the scent sets the tone for the whole home. A medium-intensity fragrance works well here — something welcoming but not heavy.

Bathroom: ideal. Small, enclosed, and benefits enormously from a consistent background scent. Our Storm or Northern Breeze work particularly well.

Bedroom closet: underrated placement. A diffuser tucked into a closet keeps clothes subtly scented without being overpowering in the room itself.

Hallway or corridor: good for connecting spaces — the scent drifts naturally into adjacent rooms.

Beside the bed: use with caution. At close range, even a subtle diffuser can feel too present, especially for light sleepers. If you want fragrance in the bedroom, place it across the room rather than on the nightstand.

Open-plan living areas: reed diffusers are less effective in large open spaces — the scent dissipates before it can build. In a loft or open concept space, you're better off using a candle for the main area and reserving diffusers for the smaller, contained rooms off to the side.

How to maintain your reed diffuser

One simple habit makes all the difference: flip your reeds every one to two weeks.

When you first set up your diffuser, the dry ends of the reeds go into the oil. Over time, the exposed ends become saturated and less effective at releasing scent. Flipping them — putting the oil-soaked ends up and the dry ends down — refreshes the diffusion immediately. You'll notice the difference within minutes.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Flip over a sink or a piece of paper — the reeds drip
  • Wipe the bottle neck after flipping to avoid oil residue on your surface
  • Don't flip too often — once every week or two is enough. More frequent flipping accelerates evaporation and shortens the life of your diffuser

How many reeds should you use?

More reeds = stronger scent, faster evaporation. Fewer reeds = subtler scent, longer life.

Our diffusers come with 6 reeds. In a small space like a bathroom or closet, 3 to 4 reeds are enough — the scent builds easily in a contained area. In a larger room, use all six to maximize diffusion.

Our diffusers — what makes them different

A lot of diffusers on the market are formulated for maximum immediate impact — you open the box and the scent hits you from across the room. That's not what we're going for.

Our diffusers are designed to be subtle and liveable. They're not going to announce themselves the moment someone walks into the room. They're the kind of scent you notice when you come home after a few days away — a quiet presence rather than a statement.

This makes them particularly well-suited for smaller spaces, bedrooms, and anyone sensitive to strong synthetic fragrances. They're also phthalate-free, like all our fragrances.

Which fragrance to choose

The same principles as candles apply — match the scent to the space and the mood.

Bathroom and small spaces: fresh, clean, airy. StormNorthern Breeze, Hinoki.

Entryway and hallway: welcoming, warm. White Fir & Peach, Golden Sandalwood.

Closet: something soft and lasting. Amber & Jasmine, Willow Blossom.

Home office: light and grounding. Oak & Sage, Sea grass, Pinecone & Wild Honey
